  • LONE GROVE — In an impressive showing for the Lone Grove program, senior Jeanea Mitchell became the third player in two weeks to sign a scholarship for softball at the next level, signing a letter of intent on Monday to attend Murray State College.
"As a coach you get close to their players and want to see them further their career," Lone Grove coach Jimmy Miller said. "It gives you a sense of pride to see them move on."
Miller was initially uncertain about whether to continue playing the game, but decided after Christmas that she was not ready to hang up her spikes and glove yet.
"It's like a once in a lifetime opportunity," Mitchell said. "I wanted to do it now, so I don't regret not playing later."
Mitchell was a two-year workhorse in the circle for the Longhorns, part of a strong squad that hosted a district tournament this year. Mitchell went 20-15 with 91 strikeouts in 200 innings for the Longhorns last fall, earning First-Team All-Ardmoreite honors.
"(Murray State coach Brent Shaw) will get somebody who will go out there and throw strikes everyday and battle," Miller said.
Shaw, for his part, is hopeful of the same thing; he will place Mitchell in the circle for MSC.
"She came and worked out for us a few weeks ago and I was impressed by what I saw," Shaw said. "I think she'll be able to come in and get innings right away, as a freshman."
