Sometimes picking the right lightening round topic can mean everything for an academic team.
Plainview, unfortunately at the State Academic Bowl, picked "The Great Gatsby" and struggled, losing to Clinton, 300-160.
That was after losing a close match to Stigler, 290-270.
"We tried our best but had some bad luck," Jantzen Faulkner said.
State wrapped up a stellar year in Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association competition, capped off by the trip to State and the school's first ever Area Championship.
Finishing with a record of 42-6, the team also won the Lake Country Conference title, the Bulldog Invitational at Edmond Memorial and the Stigler Brain Bowl. The Indians also were runners-up at the Cougar Invitational at Redlands Community College.
Members Riley Baird, John Black and Zac Campbell were on the All-Conference Team.
While the team has both accomplished and learned a lot this year, the many younger team members are looking to improve and place higher next year.
"We will still have 7/9 of our team," said Baird, who is team captain and a junior. "We will just have to make sure we make up a lot of knowledge lost by our seniors (Black and Taylor Gregory)."
In addition to OSSAA competition, the team competes in National Academic Quiz Tournaments, a separate type of contest that features as many toss-up questions as can be read in 30 minutes and bonus questions for teams that answer correctly. The team will attend several such tournaments this spring.
