  • The first time was short, but lessons were learned by Plainview.
In its first qualification in school history, Plainview was defeated 43-29 by Vian in the first round of the Dual State Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Cushing High School. The Indians had success at the lower weights, but the Wolverines were able to advance to the semifinal round.
Of Vian’s eight match wins, the Wolverines had pins in six, five coming in the 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285 weight classes.
“They’re really, really talented from 160 on,” Plainview coach Rocky Atencio said. “We didn’t wrestle well. I hoped that we learned that we have to be more aggressive, take more shots, give yourself an opportunity to win.”
Zac Atencio (106 pounds), Tyler Lawrence (113) and Stephen West (120) each had lopsided decisions in their favor, and Cade Wheelwright (132), Rustin Duke (145) and Isaac Barnes (152) each scored falls in their respective classes for Plainview. But Vian turned the dual at 160, where Drake Martel was defeated in by criteria in three overtimes.
Martel had 30 seconds to escape and couldn’t get away in the third overtime period of the highly-contested match. From there, the Wolverines scored a maximum 36 points in the heavier weights.
“That was the difference,” Atencio said. “The difference was they got pins and we didn’t. I thought from a team standpoint, we weren’t really aggressive as we usually are.”
Plainview finished 19-7 in dual meets. The Indians head to the Class 3A regional meet this week in Kingfisher.
