  • Mary Hermes Wood was born April 27, 1925, in Blackwell, Oklahoma, the only child of the late George Albert and Frances Eugenia (Donnelly) Hermes; Mary passed away peacefully at her Ardmore residence on February 10, 2013.
Mary grew up in Blackwell and graduated from Blackwell High School, the class of 1943 and then attended Oklahoma A & M College (now OSU) before moving to Ardmore to work for the Jean-Lee, a fine ladies clothing store. In Ardmore, Mary met Luke Wood; they were married September 3, 1953. Mary and Luke moved to New York City, where Mary worked for Vogue Magazine for several years and developed a great sense of fashion, style and color. Upon their return to Ardmore, Mary resumed her work for the Jean-Lee.
It was important to Mary to give back to her church and her community and she gave of her time and talents to both. An active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Mary was a lector and had been named Woman of the Year in 2002 by the Women of St. Mary.
She assisted with events for the Goddard Center, Dornick Hills Golf and Country Club, served on several boards and was active in other volunteer service. A very sought after wedding planner, Mary had planned the weddings of many young couples throughout Oklahoma.
She is survived by her first cousins, Edward A. Luke Jr., of Ardmore, Robert Phillips Luke and Kathryn Luke Griffin, both of Oklahoma City, their children, grandchildren and many friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and by her husband, Luke Wood.
Friends and family remember her strong faith, her compassionate caring for others and her positive outlook. A warm and constant friend to many, she possessed strength, good humor and a deep will to live. Her family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the loving care of her caregivers and of Faith Hospice.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 14, 2013, in St. Mary Catholic Church conducted by the Rev. Thomas Dowdell followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery. A Rosary devotional service will be at 7:30 this evening in St. Mary Catholic Church.
Serving as bearers will be Bill Meacham, Sam Veazey, Charles Tanner, Pete Fennell, Patrick Fennell, Dale Holt, Jess Storts and Nicholas Martin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or the Goddard Center in Ardmore.
