  • Ardmore's tennis team will look to expand upon last weekend's strong start when it hosts the Ardmore Tournament today.
The Tigers are coming off doubles success at the Carl Albert Tournament on March 2, as each girls' doubles team qualified for the championship match. Savannah Pfau and Katie Pinson came home as tournament champions at No. 2 doubles, and coach Becky Dickinson thinks the Tigers can continue that success in their only home tournament of the year.
Sadie Pfau and Maddy Seals were runners-up in No. 1 doubles as well in Oklahoma City.
"Our girls are strong," Dickinson said. "I look for good things from them. Our boys are young, but they can compete."
Dickinson has changed up her lineup from the Carl Albert tournament. Alex Morales, who placed fifth in state at No. 1 singles as a junior, will play at No. 1 singles, while Sarah Oliver will play at No. 2 singles. Ardmore didn't have a No. 1 singles player at the Carl Albert Tournament last weekend.
Sisters Savannah and Sadie Pfau will play at No. 1 doubles. Savannah was fourth in the state in No. 2 singles last year. Seals and Pinson will play No. 2 doubles. Seals was sixth in No. 1 doubles last season.
Despite the success from last weekend, Dickinson says the lineup changes are to further evaluate her team in the early season.
"It's an early time to see where we stand," Dickinson said.
For Ardmore's boys, Jamal Mosely will play No. 1 singles, while Brentston Castillo will play No. 2 singles. No. 1 doubles will feature Michael McCormick and Ramen Saha, while No. 2 doubles will have Christian Allen and Ben Gonzalez.
"Again we're working with combinations to see what works early on, to try to get some good wins," Dickinson said.
Participating teams include boys and girls teams from Duncan, Pauls Valley, Byng, Shawnee, Seminole, Durant and Ada. Duncan's girls were state runner-up in Class 5A a year ago, and Ada returns a top 5 team in the state.
No. 1 singles and doubles matches (boys and girls) will be played at Ardmore High School, while No. 2 singles will be played at Plainview High School. All No. 2 doubles matches will be played at Walker Park (B St. NW).
Coaches meetings are at 8 a.m., with matches starting at 8:45 a.m.
