After 23 years of service at the Carter County Detention Center, Shirley Howard House officially hung up her jailer's uniform and retired Feb. 28 during a reception in her honor at the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

During the event, House was congratulated for her devotion to her job by current and former CCDC and CCSD employees. The group also talked about the changes and improvements in the county jail over the past 23 years.

House began her career in January,1999 when she was sworn in by then sheriff Robert Denny. House was the last of the original 17 employees who served under Denny. During her career she also served under former sheriff's Bill Noland, Don Waters and Harvey Burkhart, as well as Sheriff Ken Grace.

During the reception, Grace commended House for her dedication to the CCSD and CCDC that spanned more than two decades.

"It's hard to lose such a dedicated employee," Grace told The Ardmoreite Thursday. "However, we wish her well in her future endeavors."
