Under a bill approved today by the Oklahoma House of Representatives, firearms instructors approved by CLEET would be able to obtain a five-year or 10-year registration certificate.

House Bill 1462, by state Reps. Pat Ownbey, would set the fee for a 10-year certificate at $200. The legislation also allows firearms instructors to renew their certificate without resubmitting fingerprints.

“With Oklahoma’s current open carry law, there is a need for firearms instructors and we want to encourage them,” said Ownbey, R-Ardmore. “House Bill 1462 creates a longer certificate and easier renewal process.”

The legislation also removes a $60 cap on what firearms instructors can charge to provide instruction and allows the market to set the rate, Ownbey said.

The legislation passed unanimously and now advances to the state Senate.
