TISHOMINGO — Gary Sharum has been named administrator of Mercy Hospital Tishomingo.

Beginning his health care career with Mercy at the age of 17, Sharum worked as an orderly at St. Edward Mercy (now Mercy Hospital Fort Smith) in Fort Smith, Ark. He continued his work while attending nursing school at the University of Arkansas. During his 30 years at St. Edward he worked in a variety of roles ranging from nurse manager of a behavioral health program to director of human resources. Most recently, he has worked at Mercy Hospital Ardmore as a registered nurse where he served as a team leader in the emergency department and staff nurse in the cardiac catheterization lab. Sharum is currently pursuing a degree in health care administration through Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas.

"Gary's experience in health care, as well as his knowledge of managing programs within rural markets will be a great asset to our southern Oklahoma team," said Richard Barker, administrator of Mercy Hospital Love County who has been serving as interim administrator for Tishomingo for the past several months. "His understanding of philanthropic programs will also help us further evaluate programs that support the Tishomingo community."

Sharum called the appointment to the lead role at the Tishomingo medical facility an honor.

"The role of administrator allows me the unique honor to integrate the clinical and managerial experience I have acquired in my years with Mercy," he said. "I am looking forward to serving the patients, families and co-workers of Mercy Hospital Tishomingo and Johnston County."

Sharum and his wife, Melinda, live in Ardmore. They have five children and four grandchildren.
