  • The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma will invade Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district with more than 60 student bands in 14 venues as a part of its fourth annual “ACM@UCO Rocks Bricktown” event, featuring free live music throughout the district starting at 3 p.m., Saturday.

Legendary disco-era band Chic featuring Nile Rodgers will headline the event with a performance at 9 p.m. on the main stage in the parking lot east of Zio’s restaurant.

Best known for hits like “Le Freak” and “Good Times,” the band is also widely sampled in various hip-hop hits, like the first-ever multi-platinum rap song, “A Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang.

Rodgers is a music industry powerhouse in his own right, producing and collaborating with some of the biggest names in the business, including Diana Ross, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Madonna, and, most recently, Daft Punk. He’ll share his industry experience with ACM@UCO students as a part of a master class Friday, April 12.

“This event celebrates both our graduating students and our partnership with the community,” said Scott Booker, ACM@UCO CEO.

“We are intent on keeping this event free and fun. Nile Rodgers will offer the crowds a familiar beat to dance to, but we also encourage everyone to discover new sounds from our students.”

Among those new sounds is a collaborative project between ACM@UCO students and The Flaming Lips’ Steven Drozd, called The Mutating Cell Ensemble. They will perform at 11 p.m. at the ACM@UCO Performance Lab, 329 E. Sheridan St.

A current line up of bands and venues is available at www.acm.uco.edu or on the ACM@UCO Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ACM.UCO.
