YUKON — In a deep field of predominately Class 6A and 5A teams, Ardmore's Destinee Howell cemented herself as one of the top 800 meter runners in the state.
The senior placed second at the Yukon Classic on Friday, finishing in 2 minutes, 25.69 seconds for the Tigers. The 4x800 relay of Zoe Booker, Kevi Davis, Celia Caro and Howell were sixth overall with a 10:10.15.
Ardmore coach Brenda McHatton said the Tigers performed well considering the difficulty of the meet. No team scores were available at press time.
"It was loaded," McHatton said. "We still ran fairly well. We ran the best time we've run in the mile relay.
"We had some PR's and better times, but it wasn't good enough up there."
Fox girls 2nd at Comanche Invite
COMANCHE — Fox's girls track team was second to Wynnewood at the Comanche Invitational on Friday.
Brianna Lovely was Fox's only winner on the day, placing first in the 400 dash (1:03.07), but the Foxes were consistent scorers in multiple events. Fox had place finishes in seven events, headed by Cierra Lofton in the 100 (second, 12.64) and 200 (second, 27.30).
Fox's placed in all four relays, with second place finishes in the 4x200 (1:54.89) and the 4x400 (4:31.06). Only Class 2A Wynnewood beat the Foxes (Class A) in those relays.
"All three of the sprint relays look like we're in the top three in the state in our class," Fox coach Bob McCartney said.
Wynnewood scored 127 points to Fox's 74. The Foxes edged Velma-Alma by one point for second place.
"Each time we get on the track, our times are improving," McCartney said. "Every time we run, we're getting better. Times are coming down pretty nicely for this time of year."
Dickson was fourth with 68 points, and Healdton was seventh (47). Jamie Hawkins was second in both the 1,600 (2:40.07) and the 3,200 (6:12.11), and Katy Custer was second in the shot put (31-11) for Dickson, while Healdton's Morgan Fletcher was second to Lovely in the 400 (1:04.02).
Dickson placed in each of its girls relays.
"The girls ran hard, they did a good job," Dickson coach Todd Vargas said. "The relays I was espeically proud of them because we had a few girls that couldn't be there."
Healdton's 4x800 relay team was first in 11:17.94. The Bulldogs had place finishes in all but the 4x100 relay.
Velma-Alma's boys won the meet and Davis was second. No official team scores were reported.
Davis' boys picked up wins in the 4x100 relay, from Michael Nowden in the 100 (10.96), from Blake Summers in the 200 (23.38) and from Ryder McCaskill in the shot put (47-6).
Davis' boys placed in 10 events.
