  • MARIETTA — Graveside services for William Van Batson of Marietta, Okla., will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, in Lakeview Cemetery, Marietta, under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Marietta. Officiating will be Kenneth Shelton.
    Born June 5, 1929, in Marietta, the son of William Theodore Batson and Violet Wilson Batson, Bill passed away Wednesday, April 17, in Mercy Hospital Ardmore, Ardmore, Okla., at the age of 83.
    Mr. Batson earned an Associate Degree in social work from Murray State College and then was employed as a supervisor for the Department of Human Services until his retirement. On November 11, 1950, he married Dana Ray Mayhall.
    As a member of the RCA, Mr. Batson rode bulls and bareback horses and worked as a rodeo clown. In addition, he trained race horses. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, collecting guns, attending gun shows, sailboats and building model airplanes. He was very proud of his Choctaw heritage and enjoyed attending powwows; however, Bill's greatest pleasure was enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of the Mahota Memorial Presbyterian Church and the First Christian Church.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, LaWana Rhyne; and son-in-law, Pat McDonough.
    Survivors include his wife, Dana; four daughters and sons-in-law, Dana Carol and Phil Gooden of Ardmore, and Stephanie "Stevie" and Scott Chitwood, Cathy and Bobby Spradling and Penny Batson, all of Marietta; six grandchildren, James Mahan, Keri Mahan-Quigley, Misty Chitwood-Brock, Steven and Tiffany Chitwood, Melissa Spradling-Fowler and Billy Bob Spradling; 10 great-grandchildren; and nephew, Claud and Cindy Rhyne of Burneyville, Okla.
    Serving as bearers will be Gerry Hull, Harvey Stewart, Claud Rhyne, Billy Bob Spradling, Bobby Ray Spradling and Steven Chitwood.
    Viewing will be from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
