  • DAVIS — Maybe Wolves and Tigers can get along after all.
Davis senior Kendal Rogers, the leading scorer for a team that surprised several en route to a deep 3A playoff run, signed an athletic scholarship to attend East Central University on Thursday in the Davis school library.
"It's exciting, just to see what I can really do being pushed harder than normal," Rogers said. "It's close to home and I know a lot of people over there already."
Rogers received interest from other schools, but ultimately decided to sign with ECU and coach Kent Franz because "he saw something in me."
In a year filled with a breadth of talented senior girls basketball players in this area, Davis head coach Jeff Brown sees the potential in Rogers for a great career at the next level.
"I told their coaches that, without a doubt in my mind, she'll be better than half of the players on their team already," Brown said. "It's a good fit for her, the place she wanted to go along."
Brown also praised Rogers ability to not only play a great individual game, but to make the team around her better.
"She not only knew how to set herself up, but had this ability to get the ball to people around her to somebody else who was open," Brown said. "So she'll be really good at that."
Of course, Rogers knows that it will take work and an adjustment period to prepare for the collegiate game, something she learned on a trip to East Central.
"I practiced with them last week, playing pick up games and stuff," Rogers said. "It's just a lot faster pace."
"In high school she was used to being the best player on the court almost every night," Brown said. "She's going to have to get used to another role."
Rogers has been told that she will likely play a post position at ECU.
During her senior year, Rogers averaged 20.1 points per game, 11.6 rebounds per game and a staggering 6.6 blocked shots per contest for a Davis team that finished 17-8.
