Oklahoma Equestrian Trail Riders Association Inc., the state’s trail riding association, is will have its spring trail ride in Chandler at Bell Cow Lake. The ride is named in honor of trail riding ambassador, Mary Ben Marshall, who is 90 years young and a long time member of the association. The event will conclude Sunday. Trail riding enthusiasts are invited to bring their horses to enjoy the many miles of trails around Bell Cow Lake for day riding or even overnight camping with their horses in the equestrian campground. The trails at Bell Cow are well marked and horses do not need to be shod.
Organized activities include Friday night at 6 p.m. is Friendship Stew (bring a canned vegetable for the stew, and cornbread or a dessert to share). Saturday night is a covered dish dinner and then a live band will play country music favorites. OETRA provides the meat, drinks and paper goods at all the meals. Sunday morning, a church service will be held. All activities will take place at the equestrian campground pavilion.
The trail ride is also a fundraiser. In 2013, OETRA donated $1,000 to the City of Chandler to fund gravel to install a road to the new bathhouse in the campground. This year, OETRA has also donated funds to Kaw Lake’s equestrian trails and camp in Ponca City and Robbers Cave State Park equestrian camp and trails in Wilburton.
Costs for the spring ride are camping fees of $30 (2 nights) and a $10 event fee for OETRA members or $15 for non-members. There is an event fee cap of $40/$60 for families of more than 4.
