  • EL RENO — A day's delay couldn't stop Ardmore's girls golf team from making a long-awaited return to the state tournament.
Liz Hargis paced Ardmore with a fifth-place 78, Shelby Peters shot a career-low 86 and Ardmore placed fifth as a team at its Class 5A regional tournament on Wednesday. Tuesday's qualifying was pushed back due to inclement weather, but the Tigers waited and were good enough to book the fifth spot out of six teams.
Deer Creek won the regional with a 306, followed by Duncan (318), Lawton MacArthur (338) and El Reno (352). Piedmont was a distant sixth at 392.
"We battled and played hard," Ardmore coach Marc Peters said. "Lizzie played really good; Shelby had a career low."
Katelyn Hartman (90), Sadie Salyer (96) and Ragen Holt (102) rounded out Ardmore's golfers. Hargis just missed medaling, as the top four golfers earn medalist honors.
Peters finished in the top 15.
"I knew she (Peters) was due," Peters said of his daughter. "She finally broke under that 90 and played extremely well. I'm proud of the rest of the girls."
Ardmore gets the 5A state tournament at Dornick Hills on May 1-2.
"We're really excited about next week's state tournament at our home course," Peters said. "We worked hard, they deserved it and it's gonna be fun next week."
