LONE GROVE — A double to left-center by Madill's Hunter Chapa that scored teammate Ke'ven Davis from second gave the Wildcats a 3-2 win over Lone Grove and a two-game sweep to capture their Class 4A district championship Thursday at Longhorn Field.

In the first game, the Wildcats struck for seven runs in the top of the second and made that lead stand up for an 8-6 victory that put Lone Grove in a must-win situation for the nightcap.

Madill (20-8) won its eighth in a row and advanced to regional playoff action next week. Lone Grove finished its season at 17-16.

"This was two big wins for us against a quality baseball team at their place," Madill coach Randy Rushing said. "We got plenty of run support in the first game, and Gage (Goff) did a great job in the second game of keeping the score close.

"This team just keeps on battling," Rushing said. "We believe we are playing our best baseball right now. And that's how you hope your season progresses."

Tanner Vernon scored on a sacrifice fly by Robert Johnson in the fourth, and Jacob Stewart came in to score on a single to right by Bryce Newton in the fifth to give the 'Horns a 2-0 lead.

Madill got a run in the fifth, and Samuel Bond knotted the game by driving the first pitch of the sixth over the wall in right.

Chapa was 2-for-4, including a double and an RBI for Madill, and Bond was 1-for-3 with and RBI and a run scored for the Wildcats.

Newton was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Longhorns, and Stewart was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Goff captured the win in the second game, and Grant Harmon took the loss.
