  • DAVIS — Bargain hunters and funseekers will descend on Murray County Saturday to take part in the Davis City Wide Garage Sale. The sale is hosted by the Davis Chamber of Commerce and will feature 26 garage sales as well as shopping opportunities with Main Street merchants.
"It is an annual event that we have been doing for 10 years," said Janet Mathis, Executive Director, Davis Chamber of Commerce. "We have 26 garage sales and they are all multi-family sales. One is a church, with the members bringing items for the sale. We encourage people to make a day out of it. The restaurants will be open as well as the businesses on Main Street."
Mathis said the number of garage sales is down from the past but that does not mean there are not as many bargains to be found. In the past, there have been a number of single families take part in the sale but a trend toward families joining together to put on a garage sale is taking hold.
"We have more items, just less places to travel," Mathis said.
Another change that has benefited the garage sale is moving the event from two days to one. Mathis said last year was the first time the sale has been held on one day and the response was encouraging.
"It was very successful," Mathis said. "A lot of people commented they liked it as a one day sale."
Maps indicating where the garage sales are located have been printed in the Davis News, which is available for purchase at Davis businesses. Mathis said she would also be at the chamber building Saturday morning with maps. The chamber is located at 100 East Main Street.
"Early birds are welcome," Mathis said. "The starting times very but most are ready by 8 a.m. The garage sales all have smiley face signs posted. And there will be sales at some of the stores. When people get through shopping at the garage sales, they can visit the stores."
