  • Ardmoreite staff places at AP contest

  • The Ardmoreite newsroom staff walked away from the AP/Oklahoma News Executives Contest with multiple honors Saturday night.
    The contest covered news content produced in 2012 and was open to newspapers that are regular members of the AP's news cooperative. More than 600 entries across 20 writing and photography categories were judged in three divisions, based on circulation size.
    Melissa Mangham received Division B first place award for The Ardmoreite website. Lifestyle Editor Kevin Kerr garnered a first place in the reviews category.
    Other awards included:
    — Spencer White, sports writer, placed second in the Sports Features category with "The Story of Vernon Straughn"
    — Lifestyles Editor Kevin Kerr placed second in Non-page One Layout category
    — Graphic artist Carrie Bailey took home second place in the Graphics/Illustrations category and third place in the Non-page One Layout category
    — Sports Editor Erik Horne received third place for sports columns
    — News Editor Marsha Miller placed third in Investigative Reporting for a story in the series "The Cost of Meth. Who pays the price?
    — News Writer Michael Pineda and Lifestyle Editor Kevin Kerr were third place winners in the Public Service category with a "localized look at the state questions" which appeared on the November general election ballot.
    — Publisher Kim Benedict took third place for editorial comment.
    Awards were presented at the AP/ONE Banquet at the NCED Conference Center in Norman.
    "The AP/ONE awards are about journalists doing strong and relevant work in the communities they serve," Kim Benedict, Ardmoreite publisher, said. "And, the number of awards this newsroom received is testimony to its engagement in, and concern for, the many issues that southern Oklahomans are dealing with in their daily life. The Ardmoreite news staff is utilizing multiple platforms to reach our readers when and where they want information. From our print product to our digital products, to social media, we strive to provide quality, timely content for the communities that rely on us. I'm proud to be part of this newsroom and congratulate each member for their contribution to making The Ardmoreite a quality community news product."
