Voters are slated to head to the polls May 14 to decide who will assume the seat for Carter County Commission District 1. Also at stake will be whether or not to approve an Ardmore City Schools bond issue, but tonight there will be focus on the commission candidates.

At 6 p.m. candidates Larry Darter and Joe David McReynolds will take part in the Carter County Commission Candidate Forum at the Ardmore Public Library. The Ardmore Young Professionals, Carter County Democratic Party and the Carter County Republican Party are sponsoring the event. The event is open to the public, particularly the residents of District 1, which encompasses eastern Carter County and includes the Dickson, Springer and Gene Autry areas.

Each candidate will answer questions selected by the sponsors and will then answer questions from those in attendance.

Scott Chapman, a member of AYP, said the event is designed to enhance voter participation in the election. Chapman, along with Anna Flatt, Carter County Republican Party Chairman, and Ed Frock, Carter County Democratic Party, will moderate the forum.

"We are going to do the forum like the legislative luncheon," Chapman said. "The three groups have come up with some questions and the public will also be able to ask questions.

"Part of what drove us to do this is the lack of voter participation in some of the recent elections. We want to provide an opportunity to make sure people know who the candidates are and we want them to become involved in the electoral process."

The forum is scheduled to last until 7 p.m.

The Carter County Election Board has also announced the schedule for early voting in the May 14 election — from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 10 and May 13. Regular polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 14.
