The Murray State softball team qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association national tournament by beating East Central (Mo.) 9-1 and 16-8 in the Division II, District J Championship series at the Johnston County Sports Complex May 3.
The championship was a best of three series, with two games on Friday and the "if necessary" game slated for Saturday. The Lady Aggies took control early in game 1 for the easy win, butEast Central struck first in the second game. The Falcons took a 7-2 lead in the top of the third, but MSC slowly chipped away at the lead through the next two inning and exploded in the bottom of the fifth.
Trailing by two runs, with two outs, the Lady Aggies scored 10 runs in the inning en route the victory.
Pitcher Marki Dethloff (Plainview) was the winner in both games. Shaina Crites hit three home runs in two games andSevie Carel added two 3-run homers in the series.
The team now heads to Clinton, Miss., for the NJCAA national tournament May 15-18. The tournament is double-elimination.
