  • LOVE COUNTY — An ongoing family dispute was apparently the motive behind the slayings of elderly Simon siblings Friday night.
Aaron Eugene Carlile, 65, was arrested following interviews with OSBI agents Wednesday afternoon. The Overbrook man was booked into the Love County Jail pending two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the gunshot slayings of his father-in-law, 78-year-old Thomas "Sonny" Culwell and his aunt, Marion "Almenia" Culwell, 80. Carlile reportedly confessed to the double murders, claiming his dislike of his father-in-law sparked the killing. Search warrants executed earlier in the day produced corroborating evidence linking Carlile to the crimes.
District Attorney Craig Ladd praised the OSBI for efforts that brought a swift conclusion to the case.
"I'm really impressed with the OSBI — Bob Horn and the other agents involved in this investigation. I'm very appreciative of how quickly they worked, both in their investigation and getting the reports to my office," Ladd said.
The bodies of the siblings were found by coon hunters about 1 1/2 miles from their Simon residence about 10:30 p.m. Friday. Love County Sheriff Joe Russell said at the time, Almenia Culwell's disabled son, who lived with the siblings, called friends who were hunting when he became concerned the pair had not returned home from fixing a fence. Both bodies were discovered near their pickup. Russell said the victims' bodies had been sent to the state medical examiner's office for autopsy, but indicated it appeared both had died from gunshot wounds.
The sheriff immediately requested the assistance of the OSBI.
Tuesday Jessica Brown, OSBI spokesperson, announced the agency was offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the capture and conviction of the killer. No information was immediately available on whether or not reward money was involved in the Carlile's arrest.
Funeral services for the siblings are set for 10 a.m. Friday in Simon Cemetery.
