  • YUKON — Now, Shannon Wilson can officially say she's the best discus thrower in the state.
The Plainview senior won the discus title over Bree Davis of Class 5A Piedmont on Tuesday at the annual Meet of Champions at Yukon High School. The event pits state champions and top state placers from all classifications against each other for bragging rights, and Wilson didn't disappoint.
Wilson, the Class 4A state champion in the discus, outthrew Davis by less than 6 inches with a winning distance of 144 feet, 6 3/4 inches. She also set a school record in the shot put with a throw of 41-11, good enough for second overall. Ashley Bryant of Newcastle was first with a 42-2.
"She saved the best for last," Plainview coach Jerry Naylor said. "And shot, that's two feet better than she's thrown. She threw really well."
Wilson and the Plainview 4x800 relay team of Jessica Woods, Makayla Miller, Madie Gray and Bailey Sutherlin were the only area competitors to win events Tuesday.
The 4x800 team finished in 10 minutes and 00.26 of a second.
Morgan Fletcher of Healdton proved she was among the elite 400-meter dash runners in the state with a third-place finish against a deep field. The junior finished in 1:00.62.
Fletcher was second in the Class A state meet in the 400, but she bettered her state time by 2 seconds on Tuesday. It was a career best for Fletcher.
"I thought she did an exceptional job," Healdton coach Mark Barrett said. "She held her own against those schools, and even the girls from the 4A snd 5A schools. It's a big honor for her to run against some of the best of the best."
