  • Virginia Lee Harwell Hankins, 79, of Ardmore, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, surrounded by her loved ones.
Virginia was born April 3, 1934, in Kellyville, Okla. to Charley and Julia Harwell. The eldest of six siblings, Virginia was a strong woman who brought joy and laughter to all who knew her. She married John Wesley Hankins on Jan. 6, 1952, at the Wesley Methodist Church in Sapulpa, Okla. Her life took her to California, where she spent many years before returning to Oklahoma in 1974.
With her husband, Virginia was instrumental in establishing Tractors, Inc., of Ardmore. For more than 20 years, Virginia worked industriously to elevate the family business to a successful and well-respected company within the community. Diagnosed with abdominal cancer in 1994, Virginia survived chemotherapy, becoming stronger and feistier than ever. Recognizing that Ardmore lacked avenues for cancer survivors to meet and support each other, Virginia was among the founders of the CanCan Cancer Group. The CanCans grew into a community of cancer survivors that dealt with this serious disease with humor and fun through enjoying life and the company of friends.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Sharon Kay and Gregory Eugene Twitchell, and grandchildren Adam Lee Twitchell and Ann Lea Twitchell.
Private memorial services for the family are planned, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests that mourners make a donation to Cross Timbers Hospice, 207 C Street NW, Ardmore, OK 73401, in thanks for all they did for Virginia in her final weeks.
