Clara Jackson Shotts, 86, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2013, in Ardmore. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2013, in The Chapel at Griffin~Hillcrest Funeral Home with Minister Floyd Johnson and Ron Byrd officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Healdton, Okla.
Clara was born on August 5, 1926, in Healdton, Okla., to David H. Stewart and Maudie (Justus) Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three husbands, Doyle Jackson, Sylvester “Buster” Byrd and Lonnie Shotts; her son, Robert Jackson; two sisters, Nettie Wood and Lucille Stewart; and three brothers, C.R. Stewart, Orvel Stewart and Jess Stewart.
Clara was a graduate of Healdton High School, class of 1945. Following high school, she attended beauty college and business college. She moved to California to work where she met her first husband, Doyle Jackson. From this marriage came their three children. She moved back to Oklahoma in 1948 and was a mother and homemaker. After the death of Doyle in 1968, she sold radio advertising and was a voice on the morning talk show in Alva, Okla. She later moved to Healdton, Okla., where she married Buster Byrd, and they moved to Ozona, Texas. After his retirement, they moved to Ardmore in 1988. After Buster’s passing, she continued her years of volunteering, devoting her life to her community as a volunteer at the hospital, nursing homes and was named volunteer of the year at The Ardmore Veterans Center. Clara married Lonnie Shotts in December of 1999, he preceded her in death in 2007. In 2008, she moved to Tealridge Retirement Home in Edmond where she was active in the chorus and participating in talent shows. She lived there until August 2012 when she moved back to Ardmore. She was a member of the McLish Avenue Church of Christ. Clara’s passion in life was serving God, singing and playing the piano, serving others and spending time with her family and friends.
Clara is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Welch and husband, Jim of Ardmore; son, David Jackson and wife, Janice of Crossville, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Leslie Ragland of Ardmore, Kevin Jackson of Collierville, Tenn., Katie Jackson of Dallas, Texas, and Amy Lambrecht of Benbrook, Texas. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Vinson, Mark Henson, Matt Ragland, Nicholas Ragland, Bob Dickerson and Kevin Jackson.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 this evening at Griffin~Hillcrest Funeral Home.
