Wanda Louise Burton, 69, daughter of the late Sam and Louise Maybel Vaughn Cole, was born in Ardmore, Okla., on December 6, 1943, and passed away on June 15, 2013, with family at her side.
Aunt Wanda or Miss Wanda, as she was affectionately called, taught preschool at Oak Hall Episcopal School since 1982. She was known for her passion for teaching and generous love of her students. It was her magical gift. Wanda had a calm and giving nature and was always one to put herself last. When first diagnosed, her first question was when could she return to her kids and teaching. She was a graduate of Ardmore High School and a member of Northwest Baptist Church.
Known for her love of her birds and cats, Wanda also enjoyed cooking and baking throughout her life, especially at Thanksgiving when she would be surrounded by family.
Wanda is survived by her son, David Burton and wife, Elizabeth; son, Darren Burton and wife, Tricia; sister, Gayle Nixon; brother, Sam Cole and wife, Carol; her grandchildren, Katie Dawn and Cole Alexander Burton; nephews, Roger Nixon, Michael and Larry Cole and Alan and Michael Burton; and nieces, Carla Garrison, Patty Nixon, Laura Cole, Sue Phillips and Marilyn Wolgamott.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Berry; and nephew, Chuck Nixon.
Funeral services for Wanda will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 21 at Northwest Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
A time of visitation and support for the family and viewing will be from 6 until 7 Thursday evening at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Wanda's honor to the Oak Hall Scholarship Fund for Preschool or to Cross Timbers Hospice.
