  • A 42-year-old Marietta man is behind bars at the Carter County Detention Center facing first-degree rape and drug charges.
Kermit Tyron Jackson was arrested by Ardmore police June 20 following an investigation into allegations he sexually attacked an unconscious 24-year-old woman during the overnight hours of June 19-20 at a local residence.
"The victim takes prescribed medication and was incapacitated," said Sgt. Ryan Hunnicutt, APD public information officer. At the time of his arrest, Jackson was also in felony possession of marijuana.
Formal charges filed by the district attorney's office include a "Page 2" (penalty enhancement). The court document is based on a 2002 conviction of possession of marijuana and a subsequent 2003 conviction of possession of cocaine. In addition, court records indicate two additional drug convictions in Marshall County a year ago.
If convicted of the rape charge, Jackson faces a sentence of not less than five years in prison. A conviction on the drug charge could earn him up to 10 more years in a state penitentiary.
Jackson has made an initial appearance in district court. Bond was set a $75,000. CCDC records indicate he remains jailed pending the posting of bond and/or the outcome of his case. A preliminary conference has been set for Aug. 27.
