  • Starting today, Ardmore begins another phase of the march to the 2013 football season with four days of team camps with Piedmont and Plainview.
The Tigers will host Piedmont today from 9:30-11 a.m. and Plainview Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 8-11 a.m. at Ardmore High School.
"We're viewing this as just an extention of practice," Ardmore coach Douglas Wendel said Monday. "There's not a district championship on the line this week. I feel like this is a better time than spring ball to evaluate where you are as far as depth."
Against Piedmont, Wendel said the No. 1 offense and defense will play 30 downs each, with the No. 2's and JV getting 10-16 plays each. The collaboration with Plainview is the second of the summer, as the two teams engaged in 7-on-7 practices throughout June.
But unlike those sessions, this week will incorporate pads and full contact, something Wendel is looking forward to, particularly with his second unit.
"How you develop into championships isn't about those top 2-3 players, it's about player 5-20," Wendel said. "I'm very much looking forward to seeing how they compete."
Following this week, Ardmore has three weeks of conditioning and lifting before the season starts.
"It's not about going to beat somebody, it's about trying to get better," Wendel said of this week. "In my mind, it's a pretty good renewed sense of focus, or motivation to get you through the last month of Summer Pride and into two-a-days."
