Oklahoma State defensive tackle Calvin Barnett is on the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award presented to the college defensive player of the year, it was announced today by the Maxwell Football Club.

The 2012 Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year, Barnett was a regular presence in opposing backfields his junior season. He enters 2013 as a consensus preseason first-team All-Big 12 pick and added preseason All-America recognition from Athlon Sports.

In 2012, Barnett started every game for the Cowboys and led the team with eight tackles for loss. Of his 30 tackles, 24 were unassisted.

Semifinalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced Oct. 29, while the three finalists unveiled Nov. 25. The winner of the 2013 Bednarik Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12.

The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club's selection committee, which analyzes both past performance and future potential.

Barnett and the Cowboys open the season against Mississippi State on Aug. 31 in Houston’s Reliant Stadium.
