Graveside services for Thelma Irene Burnes, 89, of Ardmore, will be 1 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, at Hobart Rose Cemetery, Hobart, with the family's lifelong friend, Bro. Gary Usher of Snyder, officiating under the direction of People's Cooperative Funeral Home, Lone Wolf, Okla.
Thelma was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Tulsa, to James Henry and Ona Delilah (Weir) Adkison, and departed this life July 16, 2013, in Oklahoma City, at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 24 days.
Thelma married Ray Vernon Burnes on June 1, 1941, and they had one daughter, Carolyn Jane. Ray preceded her on July 17, 2000. They were long-time members of the First Baptist Church in Hobart. Thelma was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and was active with the Hobart PTA and Hobart school activities. In 1960, the family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, with Ray's construction job. Thelma worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney's while there. In 1975, they moved to Ardmore, and she worked for Bealls department store.
Her pastime and hobby was making picture albums and scrapbooks of family and friends, and collecting dolls and antiques. She quickly learned to love sports while watching her four grandsons playing at Plainview Schools, and she then became an avid fan of OU and the Dallas Cowboys. She also loved to shop, go to garage sales and auctions, and was an excellent cook and seamstress.
She was preceded by her husband of 59 years, grandsons Donny and Bobby Payne, brothers Kenneth and Ralph Adkison, sister Marie, four nephews and a niece.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Rick Morse, Gene Autry; grandsons Tony Payne of South Dakota and Joey Payne of Durant; great-grand-daughters Erika, Samantha and Madisyn Payne; brother J.O. Adkison, Chickasha; sister Oleta Ragland, Duncan; sister-in-law Dolores Adkison, Oklahoma City; and many other relatives and friends.
