A Ratliff City man was arrested Sunday afternoon pending the charge of first-degree murder in what investigators believe was a domestic incident.
Sammy Beaird, 47, was killed in what appears to be a shooting with a shotgun, according to Carter County Sheriff Ken Grace. Grace said Travis Gillaspy, 38, was taken into custody Sunday afternoon at 2517 Knob Hill, a rural area north of Fox. Although Gillaspy was arrested pending the charge of first-degree murder, officials are also investigating the possibility of self-defense, because both men were armed.
The department received a dispatch call at 2:32 p.m. in reference to a shooting and a possible fatality. Upon arriving, Gillaspy was taken into custody and Beaird's body was found in a bar ditch just down the road from the residence.
Grace said the incident is under investigation, but there are indications the situation was domestic in nature. He said Beaird had brought a woman to the residence to pick up some things, and she appears to have been an ex-girlfriend of Gillaspy. Investigators believe a dispute began in the road by the residence. Part of the investigation is determining how Beaird wound up in the bar ditch from where the incident began. Two weapons have been recovered, and Gillaspy was taken into custody peacefully. The woman at the scene was not harmed.
