  • Parks and Rec events a big success

  • This month has marked the beginning of something big for the Ardmore Parks and Recreation Department.
Based on the success of its activities for the public during Parks and Rec Month, the city department is excited about what the future has to offer.
"We were very, very pleased with the turnout at each event," Director Kevin Boatright said. "It was not only good for the public, but good for our employees. We got a lot of public affirmation, and that is always good."
The department promoted three activities for July. A day at the water park, which drew 300 people, was accompanied by a movie in the park and a public appreciation day at Central Park. The movie drew an attendance of more than 260. During the appreciation day, 310 of the 320 hot dogs cooked were served up.
"Sometimes the movie in the park is affected by the weather, but the weather was great," Boatright said. "A lot of the people stayed and made it a point to come up to me and the staff afterward and said it was great.
"We do all kinds of special events throughout the year, and you really don't know what to expect. The biggest thing was people took advantage of the events and had a good time."
Given the success of this month's activities, the department will continue to line up a number of activities during Park and Rec Month in the future. And there might be some adjustments along the way.
"Since all three were successful, we will consider doing them again or maybe substituting one for another," Boatright said.
Whatever the schedule, Boatright said the emphasis would be placed on promoting the city's parks and highlighting them for family entertainment.
"Another thing we noticed was we had some families attend more than one event and it's nice to think families feel we have well-constructed events and attend more than one," he said. "It's great they can come out as a family and spend time together. It's an opportunity to not only have an event but have people meet us and showcase the parks."
