Funeral services for Bernice Loveless Smith of Healdton will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at the East Lincoln Church of Christ in Healdton. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Ardmore. Officiating will be Gary Cannon of Hugo, a former student.
Lasca Bernice Loveless was born Aug. 3, 1915, in a two-room home on the Washita River west of Dougherty, Okla., to Walter and Hester Gibson Loveless.
Bernice graduated from high school in 1933, attended Murray State College in Tishomingo, and later received her degree as a teacher from East Central in Ada.
She married Howard Smith in Pauls Valley on Sept. 27, 1940. They moved to Morenci, Ariz., where Howard worked in the copper mines until he was drafted into the U.S. Navy when World War II began. His training was on the West Coast, so Bernice moved to California and stayed in Washington, Oregon or California, wherever his ship was in port.
Bernice taught school in Oklahoma for 34 years: five years in her hometown of Dougherty, one year at Bryant Red, one year at Orr and 27 years in Healdton, retiring in 1975.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph Howard Smith in 1994; two brothers Carl Loveless and Don Loveless; and one sister Betty Jean Long.
She is survived by two daughters LaVerne and husband, Roger Porterfield of Healdton and Phyllis and husband, Carl Johnson of Ada; grandchildren Sara Hickman and husband, Barry of Wilson, Corey Johnson and wife, Julie of Birmingham, Alabama, David Johnson and wife, Stacy of Norman and Brent Porterfield and wife, Jennifer of Lone Grove; five great-grandchildren Jacob Hickman, Clayton and Abby Porterfield, Charlotte Johnson and Whitt Johnson; two brothers-in-law W.M. Smith of Davis and Charles Long of Ringling; special nieces and nephew Tricia, Donna, Debbie, and Danny; two special cousins Rete Johnson of Moore and Neil Gibson of Dougherty; a host of family, friends and former students; and a church family at E. Lincoln Church of Christ in Healdton.
Bernice was a member of the Church of Christ and had been since the age of 18. She was baptized by Brother Fred Kirbo in Deel Creek, west of Dougherty. She belonged to many professional and civic organizations throughout her life, but always placed service to God above any earthly activities.
Pallbearers are Meril Hodges, John Clinesmith, Skeet Chapman, Dale Powell, Carey Powell and Jared Wilson.
Services are under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home of Healdton. Director Shannon Roberts was a former student.
