  • DAVIS — The Davis Wolves had to go extra innings in order to win their own tournament.
It was well worth the wait.
Tied 4-4 in the top of the ninth, Taylor Martin's single proved to be the winning hit in a 6-5 victory over Class 2A defending champion Wayne on Friday. Batting as the visiting team, Lexi Williams singled with one out, Becky Wilson drew a walk and Martin came through with the base hit to keep Davis (5-0) unbeaten on the season.
Idabel answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, but Macie Buckaloo was able to pitch her way out of a jam with two runners on and one out.
Buckaloo finished with five strikeouts and five walks in the complete game.
"It was a big win for a freshman," Davis coach David Griffin said. "And the other freshman pitcher (Martin) knocks in the winning run. It's a big win for us."
Davis trailed 4-1 entering its final at-bat of the game in the seventh when Wilson blasted a three-run home run to tie the game.
"I told her to watch for the changeup and she just tattooed it," Griffin said.
Wilson finished 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Williams added two hits and two runs for Davis, which travels to Marietta on Monday.
"It was one heck of a game," Griffin said. "It didn't matter if you won or lost. The people who came got to see a game. What an atmosphere."
