  • It's Prime Time in Ardmore in week 3.
The Ardmore Tigers will host Prime Prep Academy on Sept. 20 in a Red River gridiron rivalry game. The Dallas-based charter school is coached by NFL Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders.
Prime Prep Academy will take the place of Gainesville in week 3 of the season, the Tigers' final non-district contest. The game with Gainesville was cancelled because of a difference in start dates for the Oklahoma Secondary School Athletic Association and Texas' University Interscholastic League.
Class 3A football in Texas began on Aug. 6 for Gainesville. Ardmore started its preseason practice Aug. 12.
Ardmore athletic director/head football coach Doug Wendel credited former University of Oklahoma and Dallas Cowboys head coach Barry Switzer for his role in making the game a reality. Wendel said he shares a mutual friend with Switzer and that led to Wendel reaching out for the game against Prime Prep.
"I ran across an article from 2012 and he (Switzer) was helping them last year in getting a game," Wendel said. "Prime Prep already had a game on the schedule for that week. I don't know what coach Switzer said to him, but coach Sanders told me 'Barry said I need to play you guys and it will be a good deal for both schools.'"
Ardmore won't be the first Oklahoma school Prime Prep has faced. In its first season in 2012, Prime Prep played Millwood, losing 40-12 in Oklahoma City.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to go against this team," Wendel said. "It's not a public school, but I know they have some potential Division I talent and that helps my kids in getting some publicity. That's a positive all the way around."
