  • TISHOMINGO — What did Sulphur do after its first loss of the season?
The Bulldogs played five. And won them all.
Sulphur closed out the Tishomingo Tournament with five wins on Saturday, including two payback wins against Turner in the championship 6-1 and 4-1. The Bulldogs (12-1) had to beat Turner twice on Saturday to win the tournament and did. That was following the Falcons' 4-3 upset victory over the Bulldogs on Friday, in which Turner pitcher Jacey Henry tossed a five-hitter.
Tied 3-3 in their first meeting, Perri McGill hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to lift Turner to the win. Turner entered the tournament ranked fourth in Class B.
"You start the season undefeated, you want to stay undefeated as long as you can," Sulphur coach Heath Gilbert said. "We played well, but Turner just beat us.
"I told them to just get ready to play the next game, because it could turn out to be a long day."
After splitting on Friday, Sulphur couldn't afford to lose again. The Bulldogs didn't, winning 9-0 against Bennington, 5-3 against Tishomingo and 6-2 over Silo to make the championship.
Turner struck first in the championship game to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Sulphur scored all of its runs in the final three innings. Allie Saunders went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and allowed just six hits over five innings for the Bulldogs.
In the second championship game, with Saunders and catcher Hali Gilbert fatigued, Sulphur went to Reilly Williams in the circle and Tiera Norton behind the plate. Williams was able to hold Turner to one run over four innings, and chipped in with a double, a triple and two RBIs.
Williams struck out two, walked two and allowed six hits in four innings.
"Everybody was pretty much exhausted and she threw as good as expected," Gilbert said of Williams' performance. And we played exceptional defense.
"Five games of no rest, never left the dugout. It just showed a gutty performance by every one of my players."
Sulphur defeated Marietta 10-3 to open the tournament on Friday. Hali Gilbert drove in four runs and Jadyn Ramer and Tiera Norton each had two hits and two RBIs for the Bulldogs.
Shelby Langston and Shytanna Hicks each had an RBI for Marietta.
