Jeremy Salinas dreams of playing the tuba for the Pride of Oklahoma.
The Ardmore High School junior admires his current marching band instructors, all of whom graduated from the University of Oklahoma.
"My directors are huge role models for me," Salinas says. "My goal is to put on the uniform and call myself Pride of Oklahoma."
When the Pride of Ardmore needed tuba players at the end of his freshman year, Salinas switched from trumpet to tuba. He hopes the change will increase college scholarship opportunities.
However, in order to receive the instruction and exposure for musical dreams to happen, the Pride of Ardmore is running a resource campaign through the month of September.
"This will help us grow. It will help us go to more competitions and get noticed more and get new instruments," Salinas says.
The campaign is looking for sponsors to donate to the band. Donations will fund the bands activities throughout the year, including annual events like the summer band camp, Loyalty Excellence Assurance Direction Fine Arts Camp for sixth-graders, the band barbecue and the March Mania Talent Show.
Also funded will be contests entries, new music, instrument repair and a band trip to New York City that compliments this year's set theme, "Metropolis."
"I'm looking forward to the clinicians and visiting the 9/11 Memorial, seeing a Broadway musical and experiencing a different state," Salinas says.
In previous years, the band has asked for donations as specific events happened. Now, the band will only ask for sponsors once and will receive funds for the entire year.
"I'm really excited. We've had a lot of community support in the past," says band director Chauvin Aaron. "Instead of asking people every time we have an event, we want to do a full-year campaign. People can see our whole calendar and see exactly what we are doing."
The band boosters are hoping the campaign will provide organization to their efforts of supporting the young musicians.
"The community is so supportive, so a more organized approach will be more effective. We will reach more people who may not have been approached before," says Dr. Barbara Dunn, booster club president.
Dunn has three children in the band program from middle school to high school. She has helped with similar campaigns while serving on other boards.
"We have no idea what to expect, but we'll know at the beginning of the year what to expect in funds and can plan a bit better. It's a much more organized way to do planning," Dunn says.
Various sponsorship awards will be available based on the amounts donated.
"This is an organized way to recognize our sponsors all year long," Aaron says.
