Grover Harrison "Junior" Tipps Jr. passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at the Ardmore Veterans Center following an extended illness. The youngest son of the late Grover Harrison Tipps Sr. and Mary Ann Lamb Tipps, Junior was born June 6, 1927, at Zaneis.
Junior grew up at Zaneis, graduating from high school there in 1945, and was a resident of southern Oklahoma all of his life. During World War II, he served in the C.B.s of the U.S. Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and during the Korean War was a Naval recruiter. A Yeoman Third Class, he was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal, the China Service Medal, the China Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the American Defense Medal.
He and the former Nina Leona Vaughan were married Oct. 23, 1961, at Ardmore and were the parents of Mike and Moni Gayle Tipps. Nina passed away June 6, 2004.
An employee of Total Refinery for 20 years, he was a boiler fireman, retiring in 1988. Junior had received his 50-year pen in 2007 from Masonic Lodge 31 AF&AM, and was a life member of VFW Post 4574.
Survivors include his children, Mike Tipps and Moni Gayle Hardee; grandchildren Kima Dawn Lee and her husband, Dewayne, and Jeremy Hardee; and nephews and nieces Michael D. Tipps, John Wayne Tipps, Bill Tipps, Ronnie Tipps, Harry Tipps, Susan Harbor, Patsy Tipps Merrill, Dee Callahan and Mary Ann Mays.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Harry, Willard, Homer, Harold and Tom Tipps; and his sisters, Gladys Tipps and Opal Huddleston.
A time of visitation and support for family and friends will be 6 to 7 this evening at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home and Crematory.
Funeral services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at the Harvey-Douglas Centennial Chapel, with his nephew Ronnie Tipps officiating. Interment with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy will follow at Bomar Point Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert Burns, Mike and Nathan Fincher, Corby, Casey and Kelly Key.
