Funeral services for Thomas Allen Ponder will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, in The Chapel at Griffin-Hillcrest Funeral Home, with Dr. Virgil Trout officiating. Inurnment will be later in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
Thomas was born Nov. 2, 1925, in the family home at Boggy Depot, Okla., to James Percy and Nellie (Wallace) Ponder. He departed this earthly life on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, in Ardmore.
Tom spent his younger years at Paoli and like many Depression-era families, traveled to find work of any kind, at any location and at any wage. He served his country from December 1943 to May 1946 in the United States Navy. After his service, he became employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone for 41 years. Tom met and married Bettye Jean Hart in Ada, on Nov. 16, 1947. Their life together blessed them with daughters, Caryl Ann (Ponder) Davis, Kay Ellen (Ponder) Thompson and Linda Jean (Ponder) Nyholm; four granddaughters; two grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Thomas is survived by his wife, Bettye; daughters, Caryl Ann Davis and husband, Ron, Kay Ellen Thompson and Linda Jean Nyholm and husband, James; grandchildren, Melissa Nettles, Tomi Rael, Kelsey Henley, Katey Henley, Kolton Henley and Austin Thompson.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jim Thorton, John Cobb, Larry Vinson, Leroy Tenpenny, Darrel Johnson, Nolan Hester, Jim Matlack and Mark Henson.
Family visitation will be 6 to 8 this evening at Griffin-Hillcrest Funeral Home.
