TUTTLE — Plainview made a mess of Tuttle's Homecoming festivities Friday, upsetting the Tigers 19-14 and avenging last season's blowout loss in the process.
Senior running back Austin Carrera ran for 129 yards and two touchdowns and Plainview shut down the Tigers' offense throughout. The Indians (1-0) led 13-7 entering the fourth quarter before Tuttle took the lead on a short touchdown run with less than 6 minutes to go.
Plainview's Vinnie Martinez returned the ensuing kickoff to the Indians' 37, jump-starting what became the winning touchdown drive. Quarterback Taber Jordan finished off the march with a 31-yard touchdown run, then the Indians' defense turned around to stop Tuttle's final drive with less than 2 minutes remaining.
Jordan ran for 66 yards and completed 3-of-5 passes for 60 yards, his longest going to Nate Hoben for 40 yards. Carrera averaged more than 7 yards a carry on 29 touches.
"It was a physical football game," Plainview coach Chris Berus said. "Carrera, he was a workhorse. Hoben caught that 40-yarder, which was huge for us. But really, we stopped ourselves on offense."
Berus, who has taken over as defensive coordinator this season, put responsibility for Tuttle's two scores on himself. Tuttle scored on its opening drive, but didn't reach the end zone again until late in the game. He was impressed, however, with his team's ability to outlast Tuttle despite three turnovers.
The Indians threw an interception and fumbled twice — one coming in Tuttle territory.
"To turn the ball over three times and still win against a very good ball club gives you an idea of where you can end up as a football team," "Berus said. "That's very correctable."
After the game, Berus didn't speculate whether Tuttle was distracted by Homecoming or if the Tigers overlooked the Indians because of last year's 40-7 win at Plainview Stadium. But he did stand by Plainview out-performing Tuttle throughout the night.
"We definitely won the hitting match, we definitely were better conditioned," Berus said. "As the game wore on, they had more guys laying out on the field than we did.
"All the physical aspects of a football game I thought we came out on top."
