DAVIS — Sulphur started its rivalry week with Davis with a big victory in softball.
Hali Gilbert's two-run single in the top of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie to lift Class 3A No. 3 Sulphur to a 3-1 win over No. 4 Davis on Tuesday. The Bulldogs and Wolves scored a run apiece in the first inning before going scoreless until Gilbert's clutch hit.
Harlee Griffis and Haley White led off the sixth with singles, Allie Saunders walked with one out and Gilbert delivered a line drive to right field to break the tie.
Saunders retired six of the next seven batters to secure the win for Sulphur (19-4). Her two-out single in the first inning also gave Sulphur an early 1-0 lead.
The senior finished with three strikeouts and three walks in the complete game effort.
"Allie threw her best game of the year tonight; she threw unbelievable," Gilbert said. "We played great defense and we made the right things happen at the right time.
"It's a big win for us, No. 3 over No. 4."
Davis had three hits as a team, two coming from Jolie Romine. The freshman led off the bottom of the first with a single, then scored from third on a wild pitch with one out to tie the game 1-1.
Davis coach David Griffin said the offense dried up from that point on. Romine added a double and Taylor Martin singled for Davis' other hits.
Davis dropped to 18-5.
"They just outhit us. We made some baserunning mistakes that hurt us, then we just didn't hit it. We're not a good enough team to win 1-0. We have to score; we have to hit.
"I thought we were a better team than we showed tonight."
Sulphur heads to the Sperry Tournament this weekend in Tulsa.
