  • In a recent survey 46 percent of the 1,000 American adults polled said the country would be less safe if only law enforcement and military has guns.

Forty-eight percent believe there are not enough police officers in the United States, while 7 percent think there are too many and 36 percent feel the number of police is about right.

Those who live in the suburbs feel a slightly stronger need for more police than city and rural residents.

Overall 46 percent said America would be less safe than it is now if only government officials such as the police and military personnel were allowed to have guns. Out of those disagreeing 25 percent think the nation would be safer and 22 percent believe the level of safety would be about the same.
