  • Grass skirts and hula dancing were used Tuesday to celebrate the United Way of South Central Oklahoma raising 34 percent of its annual goal.
Agencies and divisions gathered in the community room at First National Bank to report their progress so far.
"It's been great. People have been very generous in giving," said Margaret Brown, leader of the Advance Division.
A total of $290,978 has been turned in for the annual campaign's first report meeting, which had a luau theme.
"We continue to see the need increase, but we have also seen people supporting the United Way and its agencies that haven't in the past. However, even with the new supporters, there is still a void that is hard to fill," said drive chair Sara Donaho-Jones.
New this year will be tickets needed for the 2013 Red Carpet Reception and Banquet on Oct. 10. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased from agency leaders, board members or by calling the United Way office at (580) 223-0140.
This year, four nominees were named Community Heroes of the Year. They are Kay Cagle, Austin Childers, Donnell Cox and Malcolm Williams.
Other Community Heroes are Sharon Graham, Ronnie Gray, Aubry Harris, Janeane Hartman, Jonnie Isaac-Joe, Stephanie Jefferson, Ersye Kirk, Donna Kyle, Sally Murray, Jacob Newby, Andrean Pittman, Bobby Richardson, Ronnie Robinson, Carol Snyder, Carol Stephens, Lora Thompson, Cole and Jo Tidwell, and Dorothy Wackler.
The next report meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Oct. 8 at the Southern Oklahoma Technology Center Business Development Center Rooms 206-208. The meeting will have a wild west theme, and attendees are encouraged to dress accordingly.
