Where do you begin to tell a story about an honest, honorable man that loved to hunt and be outdoors. Most people knew him as "Pappy," but to Ralph and Dorothy (Edmonds) Brooks, he was Albert Douglas. He was born on August 1, 1942, in Marietta, Ga.

Growing up, Pappy loved to be challenged. He welcomed criticism of people when they would tell him he could not do something, because he enjoyed the satisfaction in proving the fact that he could do it. Pappy was always honest and would expect it back from his family and friends.

Pappy loved his country and proudly served in the United States Coast Guard. He proceeded to serve as a law enforcement officer in Oakland, California, where he retired as chief of police of central California. Upon retirement, Pappy became a rancher and showed cutting horses. He was able to enjoy his retirement in Mexico with the love of his life, Sandy. They met while hunting for doves, and after being set up on a blind date, they married on June 29, 1974. Together they have shared 39 wonderful years.

When Pappy wasn't raising Labradors, gardening or showing horses, you could find him watching his beloved Florida State Seminoles play football. Pappy was a brother of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at the Florida State University where he received his bachelor's degree. He later earned his master's degree in criminology. Pappy loved the outdoors. It didn't matter if he was hunting deer, birds or water-skiing barefooted, he loved being out in nature.

Pappy passed away on September 24, 2013, at home in Edmond with his family by his side.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughter, Debbie Metesana and husband, David; son, Michael Brooks and wife Shawnna; daughter, Kimberley Hanmer; and six grandchildren, Vincent, Michelle, Maria, Joey, Debiann and Michael.
