Oklahoma State University is now offering a new Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering degree. The program, housed at OSU-Tulsa’s Helmerich Research Center and part of the OSU School of Materials Science and Engineering, was recently approved by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.
“Providing increased learning and research opportunities for students in advanced fields like materials science and engineering is one of the main goals of the Helmerich Research Center at OSU-Tulsa,” said Howard Barnett, president of OSU-Tulsa. “Our program will develop the next generation of engineering innovators and helps position OSU and Tulsa as leaders in advanced materials research and technology. We will also be able to develop partnerships with local industries that will benefit our state’s economy.”
Materials science and engineering focus on the structure, properties and performance of metals, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, composites and biomaterials. Students in the program will work with OSU’s faculty on advanced research projects in the field of materials science and engineering.
“Materials science and engineering is experiencing a period of unprecedented intellectual challenges and opportunities,” said Dr. Raj Singh, Williams Companies Distinguished Chair in Energy Technology and head of the OSU School of Materials Science and Engineering. “This program will prepare students and industry professionals to develop reliable materials for specialized uses that may be used for a variety of applications, from aerospace and automobiles to telecommunications, energy systems and health research.”
Materials engineers develop, process and test materials for use in everything from computer chips and airplane parts to body armor, batteries and golf clubs. They study how materials form and deteriorate, determine the causes of product failure and develop solutions.
Singh and other engineering faculty are already teaching students at the OSU-Tulsa Helmerich Research Center, a state-of-the-art research, development, testing and education center.
