Carter County deputies are investigating the apparent assault of a young woman found wandering on a rural Ratliff City road Wednesday night.

Undersheriff Milton Anthony said a deputy responded shortly after 9 p.m. when a volunteer firefighter reported finding the 19-year-old "walking down the middle of the road." The victim, a rural Ratliff City resident, was reportedly incoherent. According to reports, investigators originally were concerned the woman may have had been sexually assaulted. She was taken to a local hospital and later taken to C/SARA for crisis intervention and evaluation.

Anthony said late Thursday, "it appears she was not raped. She was, however, involved in some sort of altercation."

The undersheriff said the victim had not suffered any serious injuries as a result of her ordeal.

Anthony confirmed an investigation into the circumstances concerning the assault remains ongoing. However, he reserved comment on whether or not suspects had been identified.
