  • A recent independent public opinion survey showed 70 percent of participants think Americans are getting ruder. The survey included 1,000 American adults

Just 10 percent believe those around them are becoming kinder and gentler, while 77 percent think their fellow Americans are becoming ruder and less civilized and 13 percent are not sure – findings that have changed little in surveys for several years.

Fifty-one percent also continue to agree that it is rude for someone sitting next to them in public to be talking on their cell phone, but 38 percent do not consider this rude and 11 percent are not sure.

The number who consider talking on a cell phone in public rude behavior has ranged from 43 percent to 57 percent since September 2009.

Fifty percent say they have confronted someone in public for their rude behavior, keeping in line with most past surveys but is down from a high of 58 percent in July 2011.
