  • The Marietta girls cross country team brought home the Class 3A state title on Saturday with a complete team effort at the Gordon Cooper Campus course.
Jaime Alexander finished fourth overall with a 12:26.00 and Abbie Winchester was eighth with a 12:37.00. Mallory Sykora nearly finished in the top 20 in 22nd, running a 13:17.00 and Gracie Cain finished 38th with a 13:52.
Kingston's Gracye Werth finished ninth with a 12:37.60, but the Redskin qualified as an individual and did not count toward team points.
Marietta coach Matt Appleman was pleased with his top four finishers, but it was the next group of girls that secured the state championship trophy.
Angela Hargrove was 39th (13:52.00), Bailey Sykora (14:00.00) finished 48th and Victoria Vinson (14:06.00) was 52nd.
"It was an absolute team performance," Marietta coach Matt Appleman said. "We were actually not winning the meet through four runners. Sequoyah-Tahlequah was beating us. But, our five through seven all beat their five. And, that was definitely the difference."
The Indians ran personal best times to claim the state crown.
"The majority of our girls ran their best times of the year," Appleman said. "Of course, they finished and we weren't sure if it was good enough."
Alexander was .70 seconds shy of third place. She was side by side with Kyla Holmes from Sequoyah-Tahlequah at the finish.
"I actually think (Alexander) beat the other girl at the line that they gave to (Holmes)," Appleman said. "It was really close for that third spot."
The achievement is the first state crown in the young program's history led by Appleman, a former East Central University cross country runner.
"It feels awesome," Appleman said. "I'm not sure that it's actually set in yet. Our goal all year was to get this done. It's the only thing we've had on our minds. It definitely feels good. I'm really happy for the girls. That's the biggest thing. They wanted this so bad and really worked hard for it."
On the boys side, Marietta finished 12th as a team. Zac Neely led the Indians with a 17:34.00.
"Zac Neely ran really well and finished 17th overall," Appleman said. "His goal was to be in the top 15. So, he kind of came up short on that. He ran his best time all year so it's hard to be upset."
    Tishomingo's Cameron Corbin was 24th with a 17:54.30 and Sulphur's Rico Williamson was 32nd with an 18:06.00. Lone Grove's Kendall Freeman finished 90th with a 20:58.00.
    Marietta's Jesus Fernandez (18:38.00) was 46th, Trey Balch (19:10.00) was 62nd, Coletyn Boyd (19:47.70) was 76th and Raul Valenzuela (23:26.00) was 108th.
