A rural Healdton man is being detained at the Carter County Detention Center pending rape charges, and Undersheriff Milton Anthony says an investigation centering on "possible other victims" remains ongoing.

Anthony said Benjie G. Hickman, 38, was taken into custody following interviews Wednesday afternoon. He was booked into the county jail pending a count of first-degree rape.

Deputy Gus Handke is assigned as the lead investigator on the case that began Tuesday afternoon after a victim reported she had been sexually assaulted while unable to defend herself.

"The victim said she was spending the night at Hickman's residence, which is a camper. He had made several sexual advances. She had refused those advances," Anthony reported.

The woman told investigators she was attacked after taking medication.

"He forced himself on her. She realized what he was doing, but was unable to defend herself, and then passed out. When she woke up, she realized she had been raped," the undersheriff said.

Carter County Sheriff Department records indicate the victim reported the attack Tuesday.

While Anthony would not discuss the details of the investigation, he confirmed investigators are "looking for possible other victims."
