  • WILSON — Gregory Scott Hacker, 50, was taken into custody Saturday morning after he allegedly vandalized city hall.
Police Chief Felix Hernandez said Hacker was walking down Main Street swinging pliers tied to a rope and broke the glass window in front of the city clerk's office as well as the glass door leading into city hall and the police department at 9:56 a.m.
Sgt. Kevin Coley saw the suspect swinging the rope on 8th Street, south of the building and gave Hacker a command to drop the object. Hacker failed to comply and approached Coley. Coley encouraged Hacker to comply with the request through the use of force and took the suspect into custody.
Hacker was arrested pending the charges of assault and battery on a police office with a deadly weapon, malicious damage to property, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hernandez said Hacker had hypodermic needles on his person and was not a diabetic. Hacker was booked into Carter County Detention Center after he was taken into custody.
Hernandez said the financial extent of the damage to city hall is unknown. Mayor Frank Schaaf covered up the windows and doors with plywood until a more permanent repair can take place.
