A popular, longtime Love County physician died Monday night when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the highway to retrieve his mail at his rural home.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Dr. Vergil Smith, 82, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:25 p.m. accident on state Highway 32, three miles west of Marietta.
Smith was struck by a 2013 Ford, driven by 36-year-old Troy Hooper, Duncan. Hooper, who was not wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
The patrol report described Hooper's condition as "apparently normal." However, the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
