  • Funeral services for James Donald Blalock, 78, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home and Crematory, with the Rev. Larry Murray officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Born Sept. 15, 1935, at Ardmore, to the late Grady and Vada Blalock, James graduated from Ardmore High School, the Class of 1954. He and Marilyn Gordon married on Sept. 2, 1955, in Ardmore. In 1958, he was called to service, so he joined the Air Force, and was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kan., from 1958 to 1962 where he was an electrician. James worked for the city of Ardmore for 17 years as a city electrician. He then worked for Ardmore Electric Supply for 21 years.
After James retired, he couldn't stand not meeting people, so he went to work at Steele Drug and worked until February of this year, when he became ill. He died Dec. 21, 2013, following a valiant battle with cancer.
James was a member of the First Christian Church. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge No. 32 AF&AM, was a member of the Shrine Club and of the Mattie Bruce Chapter of the Eastern Star. An avid OU fan, he went to every home game the last several years with longtime fiancée Emma Bishop, until her health declined and they could no longer go. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up, and then his great-grandchildren. James liked meeting people — you could find him at Ponders in the evening until they closed, or most mornings at Baldwin's. James never met a stranger, or if you were a stranger when you came in, when you left, you were a friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Vada Blalock; sisters Anita Jean Scearce and Rebecca "Becky" O'Neal; his wife Marilyn Blalock; fiancée Emma Lou Bishop; and great-grandsons Braydon and Braxton Wallace.
James is survived by two daughters, Donna Dobbs and her husband, Don, of Lone Grove, and Lena Beth Stevens and her husband, James, of Ardmore; four grandchildren, Grady Phillips of Ardmore, Jamie Wallace and her husband, Brent, of Lone Grove, Zeke Stevens of Ardmore, and Kaeli Wallace and her husband, Larry; four great-grandchildren, Brianna Wallace, Madison Wallace, J.J. Wallace and Charlie Wallace, and one on the way, Aubrey Wallace, all of Lone Grove; four nieces and one nephew.
Serving as pallbearers will be Al Sadler, Burl Sadler, Mike Carter, Creede Tibbs, and grandsons Grady Philips and Zeke Stevens. Honorary bearers include Jim Carter, all his coffee drinking friends, and, as dad would say, the Wednesday night eating bunch.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cross Timbers Hospice. Condolences may be made to the family online at www.hdouglasfuneralhome.com.
